I would recommend (besides what others have said), DBA HANDBOOK
by Kevin Loney. Even after being a Full time DBA for several
years i am still forced to refer to it because of its in depth
analysis of several issues. OCP guide book (8 upgrade) which i used
by Couchman is an excellent book for any aspiring DBA. Concepts are
explained clearly.
Backup and Recovery by Rama Velpuri is another good book. Some
people are of the opinion that it contains extra info. But what
matters if it contains what is needed. And it does.

I would use the Sybex books instead. They are excellent, I think much
better than Jason Couchman's. I have two of the books, Fundamentals I
and Fundamentals II (I've already passed the first test) and will be
getting the last one, SQL Tuning. They are organized so well to teach
you and emphasize the most important things, and come with a CD with
test questions, etc. They are really good.
