I would like to get some assistance with capacity planning on SUN server.
Due to Oracle license issues, I have been informed that 4 more databases
needed to be added to my server. These databases will be originating for
an existing Informix database.
Background:
---------------
DB1: 60meg - runs oracle uportal
DB2: 150meg - runs classroom software - read-only
DB3 - 10meg - runs ournals channel with uPortal
DB4 - 100meg - runs website
Peak usage will be:
DB1 9:00AM-11:AM, 1:00pm-3:00pm
DB2 9:00AM-11:AM, 1:00pm-3:00pm, 4:00am (data load)
DB3 9:00AM-11:AM, 1:00pm-3:00pm
DB4 8:00AM-10:AM, 2:00AM (data load)
DB1 (portal) - Max concurrent users - 133 could be around 270
DB4 (website) - Max concurrent users - 280
Been told these databases need to be 24x7 with hot backup strategy. These
databases are mostly read-only.
==============================================
1) Given the size of the databases and their
described usage, would you suggest trying to
combine the schemas into 1 possible 2 databases
rather than 4 separate databases?
2) Should the connections be dedicated or shared?
3) How do I estimate the amount of memory required
for SGA and the connections.
4) Questions that you would suggest I ask....
My obvious limited experience comes from maintaining environments that have
already been configured.
Any direciton/suggestion would be helpful. I am currently searching metalink
for sga sizing documentation. But, would still appreciate personal experience
in this area. Even if, a ball park figure is recommended as a baseline and
tuning takes place after that.
At this point the server has 4 - 400mhz processors. I have built 5 databases
so far, two of which are my best guess at DB1 and DB4.
The other 3 databases are my production data warehouse, my test data
warehouse, my OEM repository, DB1 and DB4. I have 545gig of disk.
I have 3072Meg of RAM, 450Meg free, 2011 swap used, 2072 swap free.
I need to pull some facts together, hopefully with metalink references, to
present to management that additional memory will be needed
for the other 2 databases, estimating a 300meg SGA for each database, Memory
requirements for the connections, and the statistics I've already
collected for the memory used for the 9iAS infrastructure and mid-tier they
had me install on this server too.
In otherwords, they only licensed ORACLE on this server and are trying to run
all of this on 3gig of memory, 4-400mhz processors, 256k cache on
the controller (I/O bottle neck) but plenty of disk space.
Thanks in advance....
Connie
