following on from your actual question :)

YES, each index will result in a slow down, but without them, querying will
be painfully slow. Email through your expected IO stats and how the users
will be interacting with the underlying data. Take care with RAID-5, go
RAID-1 or RAID0+1 if possible, especially for your trans logs.
