Yes ... Possible but u should leave your Redo and Control Files Intact .. U should not overwrite them If you do that then you have lost the state in which the DB was before the crash. Oracle Only knows now that the SCN on the file Headsr and Controlfiles match one to one.
And another thing that you need to know and be aware of is that the MTTR [Mean time to recover] from a Cold Back which ais a Month old will be GHigh compared to n Hotbackup that was a Week old.

Subject: Recovery from Cold Backup ?
Hi All,
There is question troubling me for which i need your help.
Is it possible to recover database till Point of failure with cold backup
and having all archives from the last cold Backup?
In scenario we take cold backup once in month and take backup of all
the archive generated on daily basis.
Now suppose our database crashes some take, then we can restore it from our
previous month's cold backup. But now the question is
Can i apply all the archive which was generated after the cold backup to
recover my database till Point of failure.
I know it can be done in case of Hot backups but is it possible with cold
backups also ?
Any help in this regard will be highly appriciated.
We are running on Sun Solaris 5.8 and Oracle 8.1.7.0.
Thanks in Advance
Vijay Kr. Singh
