Actually No .. it does not matter If you take Monthly Hot/Cold.. The word Mothly is nasty here ... A production Database Backed Up Monthly ...

Anyways since you are using RMAN why dont u start using Incremental Weekly Backups that will save you lot of Hard work in the end.

We are using RMAN for our all types of Backups (cold,archive,online)..

We are taking Daily backup of archive logs and monthly hot backup of Prod
databases and Cold backup of Test and Development

One word Answer ... For such a Huge DB ... RMAN...

Use RMAN... it solves a Lot of Problems.. U can do a Incremental Backup
also ..

I would suggest a Backup atleast twice a Week ... A Hot One.. No
Downtime... And a Daily Backup of the Archive Logs ..

But think abt RMAN...
