I'm not familiar with RMAN.

this is from a report :

Type Key Completion Time Filename/Handle
-------------------- ------ ------------------ --------------------
Backup Set 32618 13-FEB-03
Backup Piece 32622 13-FEB-03 db:blabla
etc...

First a delete is done of :
...
change backupset 32618 delete ;
release channel;

the command went fine => "Rman returned 0"

but the next :
allocate channel for delete type 'sbt_tape' parms
etc...
change backuppiece 32622 delete ;
release channel;

ends in :
RMAN-03022: compiling command: change
RMAN-03026: error recovery releasing channel resources
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03002: failure during compilation of command
RMAN-03013: command type: change
RMAN-06004: ORACLE error from recovery catalog database: RMAN-20260: backup
piece not found in the recovery catalog
RMAN-06092: error while looking up backup piece

Do you first have to delete the backuppiece ?
Do I have to use a crosscheck command ?

technical specifiactions : RMAN resides on an UNIX machine, and oracle
8.1.7.4 is in use
