I've had the same thing as Daniel but with 10g on Linux (RedHat) and I'm
sure someone on here has managed to spoof it so it installs ok without
having to get AS2.1, etc....but I've never got round to figuring it out
myself.

Wow...that's interesting...I've never had Oracle for
Linux even CHECK what version or distribution was..
I've got Oracle client stuff working on Gentoo Linux
right now...I think it is 9.2 something....had to play
with the java calls on the install scripts, but,
finally got it to work.
I wonder how it is finding the distribution and
version info...and if you could 'spoof' it to the
Oracle installer...
