Just my 2 cents. Besides outsourcing, technology improvement is another
fact. With advancement of DBMS, less and less routine work will be done by
DBAs. If you compare Oracle 10g with Oracle 8 (or 7), you will see how much
difference Oracle has made in last a few years. This trend will continue.
Therefore, my suggestion is that beside database administration, we, as
DBAs, need to have another skills as well, such as business analysis,
database design, or some programming skills such as C++, Java, or .NET....
I used to work with a lady who was a mainframe administrator. She had a
computer science degree more than 20 years ago with more than 20 years of
experience in IT field. Besides finishing her work, she just played
computer games. If I went to her office, I could see her play games in more
than half occasions. Since she finished her routine work, nobody bothered
her. However, if she is laid off (I hope that won't happen to her), I guess
that it is difficult for her to find a new job since her education and
experience is too old for today's technology.

Except of course for the terrible impact that all these companies
transferring millions of units of home currency overseas has, oh yeah and
the people who are now unemployed in the home country that can no longer
afford the services of the offshoring company, it's quite possibly the most
short sighted thing I've ever seen.
I am surprised that governments aren't trying to do something to prevent it.
It is somewhat difficult to see what they could do though.
