Log on to SQLPLUS on the host server and perform the following:
1. Shutdown immediate (The instance is still running), if the immediate option does not work, issue the shutdown coomand with the abort option.
2. Startup the database.

Subject: Oracle will not open after backup
Each night we run backups for our oracle server. And every morning I have to come in and run startup from Enterprise manager. I looked over the logs and it shows that it tries to open but it says "ORA-01531: a database already open by the instance Unable to open the database."
Any ideas on what is causing this?
Thanks.
