This would mean your oracle is already up and running, if you are doing
a full backup with db down and
If your process does not automatically bring up your database it could
mean
That your db never went down. If that was the case, your backup is
suspect.
Hopefully you are keeping a trace or log or check the instance alert
log, it should tell you where your process failed if indeed it failed.

Subject: Oracle will not open after backup
Each night we run backups for our oracle server. And every morning I
have to come in and run startup from Enterprise manager. I looked over
the logs and it shows that it tries to open but it says "ORA-01531: a
database already open by the instance Unable to open the database."
Any ideas on what is causing this?
Thanks.
