Usually a tran log maintenance plan failure is because one of the
databases are using simple recovery model and you cannot backup a tran log
of a db using simple recovery model. Go into the job step that executes
the maintenance plan and copy that command into query analyzer. Take a
look at the output. Any errors will show up there.

another thing to try, did you schedule/create the maintenance plan from
your
client or on the server? try at the server and re-run the job.
