NO NEED to turn off anything. Setting the /3GB will just limit the O/S
to 1gb of RAM leaving 3BG for all the applications(SQL included) on the
server to use.

On a dedicated 4GB server the /3GB will just give SQL an additional 1GB
to work with. However, if you set upper memory limits on SQL make sure
they are below 3gb.

We use it on all servers with 4-16gb of RAM(plus /PAE if the server has
over 4gb)

Thanks,

Subject: To 3GB or not to 3GB ...

Dear Gurus,

I am trying to decide whether I should pull the trigger on the 3GB
switch on an ecommerce SQL Server that I just inherited.

Select @@version =

'Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86) Dec 17 2002
14:22:05 Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation Enterprise
Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)'

4GB Memory

Win 2K3 Enterprise Edition

Also, if I do the 3GB switch, do I also need to turn off Dynamic Memory
manager on the SQL Server?

Thanks for any advice. I've been monitoring the discussions and have
learned a lot. You guys are awesome!

Sincerely,

Gerald Hopkins
