Steve,
I've had this problem before but have normally solved it just by deleting
the backup file and trying again.
Don't worry about the MTF bit of the error message - it's just Microsoft's
standard backup format.

Christine

To: "LazyDBA.com Discussion" <[Email Address Removed] backup error on sql 7
DBA group,
I received this error message on a "to disk" database dump.
The Microsoft Tape Format (MTF) soft filemark database on backup device
'dbname_DumpLocation' <mailto:'@dbname_Wednesday_Data'> cannot be read,
inhibiting random access.
The primary problem is that this is a dump to disk and the error
seems to indicate a dump to tape problem.
I have dropped and recreated the dump device and the job that dumps
to this device and still the same error. I have other backup jobs for
the same database that dump to the same path and they run fine.
I have checked around ( MS.com, google, etc ) and gotten no real
showstopper. Anybody out there run into this before?
TIA,
-steveb
