Open command window
Change directory to 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\Tools\Binn'
Enter 'sqlservr -m -T 3608' to start SQL Server with minimum
configuration
Right click master
Select all tasks
Select restore database...
On the General tab make sure that the Restore as database: box shows
"master" for the DB name
Next select the radio button for From Device: , click the Select Devices
button
Click on the Add button, browse for the file by clicking the ... button
Locate and select the master database restore file, click OK, click OK
again to return to the "Choose Restore Devices", click OK again to
return to the "Restore Database" box
Click the Options Tab sheet
Click to check the box next to "force restore over existing database"
IF necessary you can select a different location to restore the files to
by editing the "Move to physical file name" section of the dialog box.
Ensure the "Leave Database Operational" radio button is selected

7. Stop SQL Server by hitting CTRL 'C' in command window. Enter 'y'
to shutdown SQL when asked

It's been awhile since I or my colleagues have restored Master (SQL
Server 2000) and wondered if anyone has the steps handy. Otherwise I'll
go slog through MS and find it.
