Thanks for all your help on this.
To clarify then: when the database recovery model is set to Simple the
truncate log on checkpoint option is automatically set. So unless you have
some problem with your database performing checkpoints, or you have
uncommitted transactions in the log the log will get cleared every time a
checkpoint occurs.

Am I right in thinking that when I set my recovery model (SQL 2000) to
'Simple' the log file will simply overwrite itself when it becomes full?
I know that by setting this you can only truncate the log and not actually
back it up, but I can't find anything clarifying that the file effectively
eats itself.
