I like embarcadero tools a lot. I use DBArtisan and ERStudio. But in my
case (small dev team where we communicate well) I think SQL Compare by
Red Gate is a much better tool.

I've gotten a lot of responses, thanks to all! I think best answer I've
gotten is to use a database interface tool designed to run on top of
full-featured code management system.
The best one so far seems like Embarcadero Change Manager. According to
their sales guy, CM interfaces with VSS, PVCS, ClearCase, Serena
ChangeMan, and Merant. It can compare code (in a DB vs the source
repository) and deploy it out to the server. It also tracks changes in
the database in the event someone sneaks something through without your
knowledge.

You can use management studio to connect to a VS instance and store your
code. I do it here except some people here have issues with it.
Generally it is when someone leaves a solution checked out and opened it
locks it from anyone else from using it. I store all my related source
files, SSIS, SSRS rdl's DDL's and stored procedures in VS. I don't
really have an issue and I think it has benefits.

My previous employer kind of sort of used a CA product, I forget what it
was called. It would do all those things including automating the
deployment, but it was horrible, awful completely nightmarish. A company
with a few million to put behind a proper deployment and some really
smart analysts might end up with something worth having. Our company had
neither. I get hives just thinking about it.
