Another set of questions we use are concerning what is in the system
tables of SQL 2000(if that is the majority of your servers).
We ask if you didn't have enterprise manager available:
o Where would I find a list of databases on the server?
o Where would I find a list of the tables in a database?
o Where would I look for a list of the indexes on each table?
o Where would I look for a list of logins to the server?
We ask these because we found in our last search that 27 of 30 resumes
we selected for interviews, the candidates were lost without enterprise
manager. We cannot afford for a corporate DBA to be GUI dependant and
not be able to do his job without EM. If he understands his work he
should be able to perform it with just a query window.
Thanks,
Ralph W. Davis

Subject: RE: Interview questions?
I did not put answers - because
1. They are subjective.
2. They might be lengthy...
The idea I had on these - is that it brings about discussion on the
topics.
There are debates on these subjects - between developers and DBA's.
So there can't be a right answer, just a discussion about why one is
chosen in a given environment.
I'm working on a my web, and I intend to address these - I'll show the
URL to everyone next week.

Systems DBA / or / Developer DBA ? I wonder...
Explain to me how I can have point-in-time recoverability of a SQL
Database.
Why normalize database schema ?
Why de-normalize database schema ?
Which one is "better" - when and why ?
Should we enforce data integrity at the database, or in the application
code? Why?
Why are cursors deemed "bad" by most DBA's ?
What weekly maintenance would you recommend on a SQL Database?

I have a potential DBC coming in today for an interview. Anyone have a
few of their favorite interview questions I could ask to help evaluate
the technical ability of the interviewee?
Thanks in advance for your input!
