As far as I know there's no native SQL Server command to compress backup
files. You could however, compress the backup directory within Windows
itself, so any file that is put in that directory is compressed by default.
There's a good 3rd party tool that I'm testing at the moment called SQLLite
(http://www.sqltools.co.uk/Default.asp?page=48 ) There's a trial version
there which you could use. The backup size of my database has reduced
dramatically (from 19GB to 5GB).

Subject: How to compress DB backup?
Dear Friends,
I am running SQL Server 2000 on Windows2000 Server. As my databases are
growing, I wanna compress the backup file and write to the tape drive. While
I searched , I have options like 'SQLZIP' , 3rd party tool or a Windows2000
compressed folder.
Is there any native SQL Server command to compress the backup files? Please
shed some light
Regards
Kumar
