I am doing a similar process without ZIPING anything.
Using Windows 2003 R2, I have set up a DFSR folder on both the
destination and source servers. I have a SQL Server Agent job scheduled
to backup the database to the DFSR folder on the source server with
init. DFSR will only replicate the changes in the file so you get
delta's only, well sort of. On the destination server I have a SQL
Server Agent task that is scheduled later to do the restore.

We go through this process every night. Look at the job history - what
step was the job on when you killed it? I have found that the zip
portion of the process has a tendency to get hung up more than another
step in the process.

Subject: restore database on another network
Hello everyone,
I need your help in this.
I want to backup database on one server and restore it on another server
located on different network.
So far I've tried this:
1. backup database
2. zip it with 7zip software
3. move the zipped file to another server
4. unzip it
5. restore it on another server
I automated everything by creating bat files with appropriate commands
and put everything as separate steps in one job. I started the job last
night at about 11pm and it was still running when I checked at 3:30am
this morning, so I killed it.
Any suggestions, ideas?
Thanks,
Albert Frazer
