Ran a query with trace flag 7300 on to get more detail.
Results returned match of the following MS KB277002 article:

SYMPTOMS
After you install Oracle 8.x client software on a SQL Server 7.0 or SQL
Server 2000 server, and you create a linked server or DTS connection to
an Oracle server, you receive the following error message when you try
to query the Oracle linked server:
Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'MSDAORA' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Oracle client and networking
components were not found.
These components are supplied by Oracle Corporation and are part of the
Oracle Version 7.3.3 or later client software installation.

CAUSE
This problem happens when the computer is not restarted after installing
Oracle client software.

I'm waiting on convenient time to restart the server to verify.

I have installed the Oracle client on the SQL 2000 Server. I have also
setup an ODBC connection and was able to make a successful test
connection.

Have you installed the Oracle client? I could not set up a linked
server without it. I used the 9i client for MSSQL 2K and the 10.1.0.2
client for MSSQL 2K5.

Basically, you need the Oracle network and management components I
think...

Hello All!

I'm trying to setup a linked server from SQL2000 to Oracle10g using this
syntax:

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver 'HKEMSLO', 'Oracle', 'MSDAORA', 'LOHK'
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'HKEMSLO', 'FALSE',NULL, 'user', 'password'

and keep getting this error:

Error 7399: OLE DB provider 'MSDAORA' reported an error.
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDAORA' IDBInitialize::Initialize
returned 0x80004005: ].

What am I doing wrong??
