Hi Meg,
You can register in EM using an ip address, does not have to be a name.
And the answer to your question is, yes, it can be done. You may not require linked servers (depends on your overnight SPs).

Subject: off sight server...
Hi there,
i have had a request from a developer...here it is:
'I am working on a project that will involve the transfer of data to and fro a Remote Server (Windows 2000), that runs SQLSERVER. For me to login to this server I am able to do it via the 'Remote Desktop Connection' on my XP Machine.
What I would really like to do is setup within 'Enterprise manager' of this remote server a new Registration/Server Group' with 'OFSSQL ITS as the database' as so I can create an overnight run to run various 'SP's' to do the various data transfers.
The big question is CAN WE DO THIS. Is there some way of setting this up given we know the variious IP address etc etc. '
has anyone got any ideas of how this can be done?? i can only seem to register a server if I have the actual server name (we have the IP address). i've never used linked servers before and not sure if that would be able to do it either...
any help is well appreciated!
Meg
