RE: Additional Windows Cluster Node refuses to install SQL 2005 SP2

Hi John

Thanks for your response. I've stumbled across the databasejournal thread
too. But as I've never uninstalled the Setup Support files bevore I
couldn't estimate the risk involved. And because this is production I
didn't like to take a chance...

But now I will give it a shot and let you know the outcome.

Maintenance window is on 11. December

Thanks so far
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I've not done this before, but I will have to in the future, so if you do
find a solution, let me know. In the meantime, I've found this tread:
http://forums.databasejournal.com/showthread.php?threadid=47290

What this basically says is that you should uninstall the SQL Setup
Support
Files on the existing nodes, then reinstall them using the SQLSupport.msi
installer on the SQL 2005 installation disk(s)/path. For a more formal
instruction list refer to this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918357

This KB article discusses an error that happens when you try to reapply
SP1,
but to me it looks like the exact same issue as the one you're running
into.
I've performed the steps in this KB article multiple times to both my Test
and Production clusters with no ill affects what so ever. If you give
this a
shot, let me know if it works for you or not.

Thanks,

Subject: Additional Windows Cluster Node refuses to install SQL 2005 SP2

I have a SQL Server 2005 Cluster with SP2 and CU2 (KB936305 Build 3175)

Now I've added an additional Node. The Windows part went through like a
charm and the new node is recognized by the MSCS.
The addition of the new node to the SQL Server Ressource through
Add/Remove Programs (as described in SQL Books Online) installed the SQL
Server binaries from build 1399 (RTM) on the new node.

Starting SQL Server 2005 SP2 setup on the "new" node shows Database Engine
(1399) and offers the upgrade. It then first tries to update the passive
"old" node and failes with the errormessage: No passive nodes were
successfully patched, Exit Code Returned: 11009
Then the SP2 setup stops without updating the "new" node.

Re-Applying SQL Server 2005 SP2 on the "old" node is not possible as the
dialog states that the Database Engine (3175) is already newer.

Someone experienced the same and has a fix for this?

Regards
Daniel
