I'll update some of our DBs that way if the vendor software and DB structure are easy to understand (for example our Landfill DB). But with our Oracle Financials or ADP payroll system - never, unless I concoct a SQL and get it approved by the vendor's tech support people first.

Well if The Auditors (whoever they are.... sinister people walking around in Matrix style suits...) catch a discrepency between the paper trail and the actual data someone might be for the high-jump....
However as it's a date and not a financial amount you're dealing with, Mr Smith would have to;
A) be extremely good at his job to catch it
B) Be totally anal...
To be totally safe, I'd make sure you had it issued as a request by someone higher up in the chain of things. Then it'd be their fault that the data was being changed outside of acceptable channels. You could always claim you were following orders... worked at Nuremberg... sometimes...
