RE: Silly Question

Yeah, actually there are, if your database has a certain type of data.

My databases have data that is used to support (or debunk) global warming.
This data is collected by the Federal Government. Even for dates, they have
a real big thing about changing data unless you document the whole thing
completely, and you have a reason to change the data that the EPA agrees
(not 'would agree') with. In my case, that is what most of my time is spent
doing...documenting. Where data came from, why data might be odd, what sort
of conditions were involved, who was involved, who found the problem first,
what was done IN THE PAST to rectify such problems, what is being done now,
what is proposed, WHO is proposing...

You get the idea. Notify your superior. If you have the power, involve legal
counsel, if not, let others do it, but make sure that it is known precisely
WHO generated that data, HOW (manual input?), effects...in my world, where
the numbers represent tons of CO2 generated, not dollars, changing data is a
very serious thing indeed. Hopefully your data is not that important. Even
if it isnt, document it anyway.

Subject: Silly Question

Hi gang,
can someone tell me if there are any laws against changing data in a
database. I had a shipper put an incorrect date on the shipment date and
the only way for me to correct the issue is to go and change the date.
The problem is that the batch has been closed and invoices have been
sent out on it. I just want to know if there's any laws on auditing or
anything that I can reference to not do this? I'm trying to make a case
against careless data entry.

Thank you,
