I have been successful at conducting backups using the local dump and
then network copy as well as the remote network backup strategies. Both
work, but you must also couple that with a backup verification process.

And remember, Microsoft does not recommend (nor do a lot of people)
backing up across the network as a spike during backup can corrupt the
backup file. They suggest a local backup and then copy the file across
the LAN. Having said that, I have successfully backed up across the wire
at a couple of different employers without issue. Maybe just lucky??!!
