For over 20 years, backing up across a 100Mb LAN failed for me about
0.1% of the time, but that failure tended to be a hung process and
occasionally left a corrupted backup file. Pain from those ambiguous
failures was bad enough that I simply stopped doing it in environments I
was responsible for. I started doing it again a few months ago on a
Gigabit network, and have had no problems at all.

Na, you're not lucky - I've been backing up across the network for years
and have not had a problem ~ knock on wood ~ smile

backing up across the network as a spike during backup can corrupt the
backup file. They suggest a local backup and then copy the file across
the LAN. Having said that, I have successfully backed up across the wire
at a couple of different employers without issue. Maybe just lucky??!!
