That is true. Also PSS has a utility that mimic's the SQL backups to test
network related issues. Network backups thorough PSS are on a best effort
basis.

And remember, Microsoft does not recommend (nor do a lot of people) backing
up across the network as a spike during backup can corrupt the backup file.
They suggest a local backup and then copy the file across the LAN. Having
said that, I have successfully backed up across the wire at a couple of
different employers without issue. Maybe just lucky??!!
