I agree. Although I never had problems with backup over Ethernet (both 100Mbps and 1Gbps) I rarely use it. I think it's more efficient to backup locally and then copy over the network, though I don't have figures to back this up. However, I believe the failure rate of the backup over the wire (if any) depends greatly on the network quality (rather than speed), the NIC drivers and the routers in between (if any). And remember; always verify production db backups (never enough times one can say that...)
