RE: SS 2K differential backups

RE: SS 2K differential backups

This is not a true statement. A differential backup saves everything since
the last full backup. For example I do a full backup at midnight. I do a
differential at 3AM, 6AM, and 9AM. The server crashes. I restore the full
backup, then the 9AM differential and I am back to the 9 AM status of the
db.

What you described below are transaction log backups!

Hope this helps.
Tom

I need to implement a backup routine incorporating full and differential
backups for a SQL 2000 database.

If I do a nightly full backup and an hourly differential during the day
could anyone confirm that I need to APPEND each differential backup to the
backup media until the next full backup, in other words all that days
differentials would need to be applied in the event of recovery?

Thanks, Caroline.
