Hi
Dont get too caught up with RAID 5, you really need to understand the
Read/Write characteristics of your app first. If you dont have the money
for RAID10, then what? lots of RAID-1's or a nice big RAID-5 with a couple
of small raid-1's?? people say is simply to buy whatever because HW is
cheap, but I have yet to see any org (apart from those in the mining or
finance industry) that doesnt have a strict budget, dont forget, server HW
IS expensive (HP RAM at A$2000 for 1Gb! what the!), couple it with
our-rageously expensive disk arrays and racks etc.
I have successfully used RAID-5 for many years with no adverse issues and
fantastic performance. I have always enabled write ahead caching and with a
good BR plan, dont loose any sleep over my decision.
Cheers
Chris.
