Kevin,
OK - yes they are the same thing. :-)
Right-click your server in Enterprise Manager and select Properties. Select
Memory tab. If using dynamic memory slide the bottom slider to the left a
little so that you give the OS a bit more memory to play with - I usually
give at least 128Mb if there are no other apps on the box. SQL Server is
good at doing a memory land-grab and doesn't like to give it back when asked
to by the OS.
If using static memory do the same thing.
As for /pae and /3gb see this article:

Please forgive me. I thought memory and RAM where the same thing. Can
you explain the difference?
I know what the boot.ini file is but I don't understand your reference
to "/pae and /3gb".
Thankyou,
-Kevin

My question was how much memory have you allocated to SQL Server? Not
how
much RAM you've got.
As for using 8Gb you need to set both /pae and /3gb in the boot.ini
file.
This applies to WIn2000 Advanced Server - are you using this?
Mark.

We have 8 GB of memory on that machine. We have not been able to get it
to use any more than the default 1.7 GB though (that's a separate
issue...let me know if you know the answer to that one as well)

I see Mark suggested 'out of memory ' could generate that error?
